KID QUILT #4 - 2WENTY-THR3E

For this quilt, I used this collection called "2WENTY-THR3E" by Moda.  There were 42 strips, with only a few repeats.  Each strip measured 2.5" x 42". For the border and binding, I used yardage from JoAnn Fabrics and Crafts Store.
   
The pattern for this quilt is called "Parquet" and a friend showed me a block, but she had lost the actual pattern itself, so I had to be a little creative.  My friend told me to use colors randomly, but that really goes against the way my brain is wired, so I created an Excel spreadsheet and carefully planned out the placement of each piece.  As you can see, I really, really pre-planned this project!  I wanted to be sure that no two fabrics that touched were the same!

The backing is a mottled yellow/gold flannel and was purchased from JoAnn Fabrics and Crafts Store.  

The finished size of the quilt is 52" x 72".

I used Warm and White batting, also purchased from JoAnn.  The quilting pattern is called "Lockets" and I purchased it in digital form from Urban Elementz. The thread I used was YLI Pastels.

KID QUILT #3 - ROGUE ONE

For this quilt, I used this collection called "Rogue One".  There were 42 strips, with 3 of each of 14 different fabrics, and I purchased the fabric at Keepsake Quilting.  Each strip measured 2.5" x 42". For the border and binding, I used yardage from JoAnn Fabrics and Crafts Store.

 
The pattern for this quilt is a modified version of the pattern called "Jelly Roll Race 1600" and you can find the tutorial on the Missouri Star Quilting Company youtube channel.  What I did to modify it was that I cut each strip in half first, and then cut the very first strip in half again. The backing is a mottled bright blue flannel and was purchased from JoAnn Fabrics and Crafts Store.  

The finished size of the quilt is 52" x 72".

I used Warm and White batting, also purchased from JoAnn.  The quilting pattern is a general meander and it came with my new Quilt Magician.  The fabric is so detailed that I needed a quilting design that was simple. The thread I used was YLI white cotton.

KID QUILT #2 - SPRING-A-LING

For this quilt, I used this collection called "Spring-a-Ling" by Moda.  There were forty strips, with only a few repeats.  Each strip measured 2.5" x 42". I also used some Kona white.

The pattern for this quilt is called "Stack and Flip" and you can find the tutorial on the Missouri Star Quilting Company youtube channel.  The backing is a bright green flannel and was purchased from JoAnn Fabrics and Crafts Store.  Since I only used 33 strips for the quilt top, I used the remaining 7 strips for the binding, along with some more of the Kona white. 

The finished size of the quilt is 52" x 72".

I used Warm and White batting, also purchased from JoAnn.  The quilting pattern is called "G Daisies" and it came with my new Quilt Magician.  The design is casual and perky, which I think goes with the general feeling of the quilt. The thread I used was YLI white cotton.

The first step was to sew 33 of the strips together, side to side, and then trim the edges so they were even.

After the sides are trimmed, the top is sliced into 3 pieces, the middle piece is flipped, and sewn back together with white strips in between. Then, a thin white border is added.

KID QUILT #1 - PINKING OF YOU

For this quilt, I used this collection of pinks (and one purple) from Wilmington Prints.  There were forty strips, with two of each color.  Each strip measured 2.5" x 42".

I found the idea for the design of this quilt from a photo I saw on Pinterest, but I do not know what it is called.  I used all the strips, plus some Kona white.  The backing is a really fun pink plaid flannel and was purchased from JoAnn Fabrics and Crafts Store.  I also bought the fabric for the binding there.  

The finished size of the quilt is 54" x 73".

I used Warm and White batting, also purchased from JoAnn.  The quilting pattern is called "Sea Foam" and I purchased that digital design from Urban Elementz, where I get most of my designs.  I purchased this design recently, and this is the first time I have used it.  I really, really like it!  The thread I used was YLI white cotton.

QUILTS FOR THE KIDS, GRANDKIDS, AND GREAT GRANDKIDS!

Several months ago, I decided to make twelve lap size quilts for some of my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  They were given the choice of fabrics from 2.5" strip collections, shown below.

 After the choices were made, I started sewing.  At this moment in time, I have completed eleven of the quilts, and I will start the last one in the next few days.  Then, it will be time for a road trip to present them all.

I'm going to write a blog post with photos and videos for each quilt, and will get them posted as I have time.

SUN BONNET SUE - RETRO QUILT

From time to time, I have the pleasure of taking a customer's blocks that were made years ago, and designing and creating a quilt out of them.  

A couple of weeks ago, I received 12 hand-appliqued "Sun Bonnet Sue" blocks from a customer of Roberts Sewing Center (many thanks to Jane for the referral!) that had been sewn by the customer's wife before she died a few years ago.  After meeting with Don and discussing his desires for the twin size quilt, I designed the quilt using my quilting software, shopped for the fabric at Roberts, assembled the quilt, and quilted it on my Tin Lizzie Ansley 26 long arm quilting machine.  Attaching the binding and a custom label completed the project, and Don will be picking it up soon to present to his new great granddaughter, Maya.

Roberts has an extensive selection of 1930s prints, and I had a lot of fun choosing the coordinating prints for the quilt.

 This is the quilt top, partially assembled, on the design wall in my home studio.

 

  I learned a new technique, which was designing the sashing and inner border to include the points of the setting stars.  I love the way it turned out!

This is a closeup of the bottom right corner of the quilt top before it was quilted, to show the detail in the double border with setting stars.

Here is a short video of some of the quilting.  I used a digital quilting pattern called "Pansies" that has flowers, leaves, and little swirls.

Don chose to use premium quilting fabric for this quilt, and the final cost of the project was $395.  If a customer wants to use regular fabric rather than premium fabric, it would reduce the cost of a similar project.

BLAST FROM THE PAST MEMORY QUILT

A few weeks ago, I got a call from a person who had found me on the internet by googling "quilter near New Lenox".  He said he had an idea for a memory quilt for his wife and wanted to commission me to make it.  He stopped by with the rough sketch shown above.  When he told me his name, we realized that our fathers (both now deceased) were close friends, and his parents are my god parents, whom I had not seen in over fifty years!  Small world!

I referred him to Karen Musgrave to have the memory blocks created, because I do not do applique.  He brought the blocks to me a few weeks later and I designed the quilt.  He had also brought me a pillow to show the colors of his family room, and I made a trip to Roberts Sewing Center to shop for fabric for the top and a cozy flannel for the backing.

I pieced the top, quilted it with my Tin Lizzie Ansley 26 quilting machine, using a new digital design that my customer picked out, called "Lockets", which I have fallen in love with!  I get my digital quilting designs from Urban Elementz.

  

I finished the binding this morning, and I am so happy with the way it turned out!  This is going to be a lovely surprise for my customer's wife!  The only problem is that he told me not to call him, for fear his wife would answer the phone, so now I have to wait for him to call me!

One last thing...  With my new Quilt Magician computerized digital quilting system, I was able to perfectly size the quilting pattern so that the borders have centered heart lockets, and it ended up looking like a custom border pattern, without the extra fuss and expense to my customer.
